My curation crush this week is on portable.tv. Actually I’ve been crushing on them for a while and this is the first time I’ve decided to open up about my feelings and share their amazing content. Let me break it down for you. Portable curates articles around videos in fashion, film, music, and art. They’re never super snobby about stuff and I can always expect honesty and humor in their articles. Another point in their favor - they had Vimeo VP of Creative Development Blake Whitman curate an article for them, and videos he likes are instant gold.
My favorite thing about them though is their ability to tell stories through video curation. Their video compilations are always tied together by a funny, informative, or clever story line that keeps me clicking next and longing for more once they’re done. Here are some of my favorites:
Act Your Age: Movies’ Oldest Stars
This was a compilation of clips of some well-known teen movie characters who were well beyond their teen years. It was an excellent collection of some classic characters who I had no idea were so old. It was also an awesome excuse to watch some clips from my favorite movies :)
Alright they used gifs instead of videos in this one but it still told a great story and one I never get sick of - fierce women. They picked their classic “Head Bitches in Charge” and I thought it was spot-on, especially with Meryl Streep as #1.
Nevermind: A Cheat Sheet to Nirvana
This was a great story they did for the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and was perfect for fans and newbies alike. It’s a compilation of videos that help cover what’s been going on in Nirvanaland the past 20 years.
