Curation Trend: Occupy Wall Street

My aunt, a fervent TV watcher, called me the other day, and she said “What’s all that noise? It’s hard to hear you.” I replied, “Oh, It’s the Occupy Wall Street protestors in the background.”“What’s that?” she asked. I was shocked. “Haven’t you heard of Occupy Wall Street? Isn’t it all over the news?” “The only thing that’s on the news is Kim Kardashian’s wedding and Amanda Knox,” she said.

My aunt’s general sincerity about the news highlights the problem with traditional media and mainstream television. I realized that Occupy Wall Street was ignored by some major media sources. Other media sources, however, relished in covering Occupy Wall Street. I watched a few news stories on mainstream TV, but I realized that they did not present the facts clearly. It seems like they never got to the heart of the story. They didn’t even talk to protestors or do any time-consuming research. Instead, it seemed like they opted out for easy-to-grasp story lines. My guess is that they were constrained by bureaucracy, biases and deadlines.

Whether you are a supporter of the protests or against it, you have to admit that it is an important event in contemporary history. I’ve learned about Occupy Wall Street thanks to the guerilla filmmakers, journalists and citizens who captured it all on film. Each day there seems to be a new Occupy Wall Street video on Redux, and since the videos are hand-selected by individual curators there’s never an underlining bias. Here are some of my favorite Occupy Wall Street videos that you can check out on Redux:

Right Here All Over
Channel: Cinematheque
Curator: Kira

Wow, this short documentary was a fascinating watch. The director puts you right smack in the middle of Zuccotti Park in New York. We see exactly how the protestors operate, where they get their food and supplies, and how they work. Contrary to popular opinion, we see protestors young and old from all types of backgrounds who give us intimate details about why they joined the protest.

Hot Chicks of Occupy Wall Street
Channel: Modern Sex

Self-explanatory

Scooter Police Tussle With Occupy Wall Street
Channel: Caught on Tape
Curator: MikeonTV

Another shocking video from Caught on Tape. This channel provides up to the minute coverage of Occupy Wall Street and catches those viral videos before they go viral. This video was captured from a citizen who was in the middle of the chaos.

More Than One Demand
Channel: Documentaries
Curator: Kira

This documentary delves into the infamous signs created by the protestors. What do they mean? Why do they create their slogans? Mainstream media consistently say that the protesters’ messages are unfocused, but the protestors have a very different story to tell.

Occupy Chicago
Channel: Occupy Wall Street
Curator: CynCyn

New York has been the focal point of the Occupy Wall Street movement, but the protests have sprung up all over the nation from San Francisco to Chicago. Chicago may not be getting all the attention, but this video interviews windy city protestors, and films it straight from the street.
