Over the next couple weeks Redux curators will be sharing their favorite five posts from 2011. I’m going to get us started with some of my favorite short films I’ve posted in my Cinematheque channel this year.
When I first began to peruse my channel to pick my top five I came to the realization that a) I’ve watched at least over 1,000 short films this year and b) out of those I have way more than five favorite shorts. Thus I tried to pick the most diverse selection that showcased the variety of the talents I witnessed online today. Here they are in no particular order.
This short film is a gem that I’ll never tire of watching. The effortless flow between scenes and mass inundation of information that still managed to feel like a casual conversation is genius. It’s hard not to be engaged when you realize what a badass this guy’s grandpa is.
Rock n Roll, Sex, and Leather in the middle of nowhere suburbia depicted in simple, lo-fi wonderfulness. If that doesn’t already have you falling in love, then the fact that filmmaker Eddie O’Keefe made The Ghosts with no budget in his home town of Elmhurst, Illinois should.
This German short won the Swiss Hotel film Award and was shot in only two days. It was a fun and imaginative story about a talking hotel bed who discloses the previous inhabitants of the room and their vices to a news reporter. I loved the way each story tied into the next and came together full circle by the end.
Ok this may be cheating a little as a selection since this is five videos BUT they make up one story. The studio Little Minx created this exquisite corpse, which is a surrealist method of connecting a collection of images, words, etc. Each addition to the collection plays of the previous one. So in this case each director had to leave off where the direction of the previous ended. Each piece is spectacular on its own and features the work of some very talented directors. Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4. Part 5.
What I loved most about this short was that it was made quite simply (they filmed it all on a computer webcam), but it had such a strong impact. It goes to show that with a little creativity you can create an excellent short film with little to no resources. After watching this there is now a piece of paper that stays over my webcam at all times.
