The Marriage of Creators and Curators

Awesome visual notes from the panel.

Content curation and creation are moving so rapidly that we’re trying to define the terms to describe what we’re doing as we’re doing it. Two panels at SXSW Interactive really spoke to this. The first was Kirby Ferguson and Austin Kleon’s panel “Everything is a Remix, So Steal Like an Artist.” With the birth of YouTube and ease of online sharing, copyright lawsuits have attempted to put the power back in the hands of big media. Kirby Ferguson took a huge step against this through his video series. It has helped to shed light on the remix culture that has always existed in creation. Although many in the audience admired Ferguson’s leaps forward, there was still a tangible hesitancy in the crowd to join the movement. The big question being, would they be hurting their careers and future if they did. The scare tactics used by these corporate lawsuits seemed to have made an impact.

The Loft: Best Indie Music Videos 2011

We all know that the radio is shit, the top forty is a laughing joke,  and pretentious indie blogs promote crap for the sake of “obscurity.”

So here’s my choice for the best indie music videos and indie rock artists of the year unfiltered by corporate control and snarky music critics:

Channel Spotlight: Cinematheque

When I was a film student in college, I had to endure hours and hours of silent cinema screenings in order to “understand” film history. These were the classics, my professors urged. If you ever have to sit through Birth of a Nation, you’ll soon realize the price you have to pay to be “cultural.”

I was taught to analyze film from a “critical perspective,” which is probably why I look at E.T.’s finger and immediately think “OMG, phallic symbol, HELLO.” Okay, so I admit there may be too much over-analysis and Freudian symbolism in film theory, but I did gain a deeper appreciation for cinema quality, something that is lacking in modern Hollywood cinema.

Curation Trend: Halloween

I woke up today and totally forgot it was Halloween until I saw a lady walking across the street dressed as a bumble bee. I quickly became nostalgic for when October 31st marked the commencement of a two week sugar high. Although all the Halloween parties already happened this weekend and my front door is inaccessible to trick or treaters, I figure its better to get into the spirit than reminisce my younger years. Also, tomorrow all of the Halloween candy goes on sale so I can still embark on that two week sugar high :)

Luckily when I signed into Redux there were tons of Halloween videos posted to help me get the right Halloween vibe going. Here are some of my favorites. Hope they help ya get in the right spirit as well. Have a safe and fun holiday!

Redux and Storyful pioneer Curated Global News for TV, SONY partners with Redux to enhance TV content offerings

We’re excited to announce a new partnership that will bring Storyful’s high-quality, vetted, and up to the minute global news curation to Redux in a lean-back video channel, perfect for consumption on your living room TV.

Today, Broadcast TV stations are a common way for many people to learn about current and global news on their living room TV. But broadcast TV can’t keep up with the real-time web, and many sources aren’t transparent about their point of view or bias. By contrast, online video can often cover events up to the minute - just one person with a cell phone camera is now enough for real-time coverage. But, the integrity of the sources is often suspect, the technical quality of the video is usually low, and there’s simply too much content to wade through to figure out what is newsworthy. For instance, during the Egyptian revolution, over 100,000 videos were uploaded - it’s difficult to know where to start.

Storyful solves this by taking advantage of the immediacy of social media, and providing rigorous integrity by checking video sources, as well as adding meaningful context with its staff of professional journalists. Combined with the Redux TV experience, the curated news channels from Storyful are an ideal way to consume the latest and most relevant news that audiences need to know about.

The Storyful partnership is an exciting addition to our TV experience, which has seen continuous growth since we announced the partnership with Google TV earlier this summer. We’re excited to reveal a few key growth milestones, and put together an infograph documenting a few milestones over the last year and half:

We’re particularly proud of the one-hour long session times, indicating that people are watching Redux as they would watch TV - they’re leaning-back and consuming it for hours on end.

We’re also excited about a partnership announcement with SONY. Redux is featured within the Sony entertainment channel on the Google TV platform. This brings an enhanced discovery experience to the Sony Internet Television product line, and further expands the reach of Redux’s TV experience.

We’re continuing to close deals with fantastic partners to extend our TV experience to more platforms and audiences, and we’re just getting started. Check out the storyful channel and feel free to drop us line to let us know what you think.

Redux editor-in-chief Andy Schneider contributed to this announcement.

Curation Scout: Barcelona’s Music Documentary Festival

In-Edit Beefeater (Festival Internacional de Cine Documental Musical de Barcelona) is my idea of Mecca. Okay, so the name may sound kinda weird and anti-vegan (Beefeater is the name of London Gin), but what’s in a name?

I’m a huge musicphile, and so are the creators of this Spanish festival who are music fans that celebrate the union of film and sound by curating the most compelling, evocative, diverse and entertaining music documentaries in the world.

The festival screens quality films, past and present, on every topic and genre imaginable from Kurt Cobain: About A Son to Lil Wayne’s The Carter.

Curation Trend: Occupy Wall Street

My aunt, a fervent TV watcher, called me the other day, and she said “What’s all that noise? It’s hard to hear you.” I replied, “Oh, It’s the Occupy Wall Street protestors in the background.”“What’s that?” she asked. I was shocked. “Haven’t you heard of Occupy Wall Street? Isn’t it all over the news?” “The only thing that’s on the news is Kim Kardashian’s wedding and Amanda Knox,” she said.

Curation Trend: Music and Comedy

I’ve always thought that music is a topic that’s taken way too seriously by pretentious music critics and snarky music journalists. Sure, some musicians believe that their art is untouchable, but it’s always a good thing to laugh at yourself and find humor in even the most serious of professions. I came across a bunch of funny videos this week on Redux that seamlessly combines the genre of music and comedy.

Curation Scout: Whore Church

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. With a name like that, you’re going to read this blog post for sure or you might think that I’m part of a crazy cult.

No, the Whore Church isn’t some demonic cave where animal sacrifices are performed for the great lucifer. Nor is it a porno movie where a bunch of chicks dressed as nuns perform salacious acts (which does exist by the way).

It’s actually an extremely popular blog that entertains you by showing you the weird, grotesque, shocking or just plain nasty oddies that humanity and the internet has to offer.

Each day the Whore Church collects a bunch of hilarious images and videos under a strange topic like Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan girls, axe-cops or Japanese Underwear.
